Reviews and Commentaries
" Martin Charlot is from the most distinguished artistic family living in Hawaii.... He is a brilliant muralist in his own right and has been commissioned often to paint the walls of prisons, schools, and the Waiahole Poi Factory. At the latter, Charlot painted a hawaiian Christ being betrayed in a Polynesian Garden of Gethsemane as a protest against the eviction of farmers at the Waiahole/Waikane valley on Oahu." New York Arts weekly, No. 444, 10 November 1982 "His vision derives from an eclectic spiritualism and from humanistic concerns, especially a strong identification with the Hawaiian people, their land and traditional culture. For Charlot art is a social link. " It is within the reality of who the artist ius that he finds the raw material for his artistic statements." Journal of the American Planning Association,Vol, 56, No. 2, Spring 1990 "Charlot often works in grand scale.....in order to shed light on political or social issues. Both a highly skilled draftsman and colorist, Charlot imbues his works with rich, vivid hues and tones, in the traditions of both tropical Mexico and Hawaii, and a magical realism or surrealist luminosity and attention to detail, ...." Contemporary Chicana and Chicano Art, Arizona State University, 2002 " Martin Charlot grew up in Hawaii, apprenticing with his father, the renowned artist and muralist, Jean Charlot, a major influence on the Mexican muralist movement of the twenties and thirties, and a teacheriego Rivera. Martin Charlot is known primarily as a muralist. His media includes oil, fresco, acrylic, ceramic tile, relief porcelain and etched glass. Over the past 20 years, Charlot has completed numerous site-specific commissions offering sensitive esthetic solutions to specific concerns regarding subject matter and architectural placement. His works have been featured in art books and magazines internationally. .... In addition to creating murals, Charlot is a writer, actor, film-maker, illustrator and educator....
