ART EXHIBITION: CELEBRATED ARTIST MATTIA BIAGI
"We are all guilty, we are all victims and I am the first one....."
WHAT: Celebrated and internationally recognized artist Mattia Biagi continues his journey with the medium of black tar. Mr. Biagi uses black tar to construct a world unto its own.
Biagi's vision is in full view as he implements the use of tar to illuminate the juxtaposition of man made objects and the way in which they interact and correlate with the idea of man vs. technology. Subject matter includes childhood objects, fairy tales, musical instruments, and transportation. The process and objects which at first glance may seem simplistic; under the right circumstances, reveal duplicitous natures and agendas. The tar, while at first impression can be understood as cloak-like, maintains a duality in that it serves to enhance the intrinsic qualities of the subject at hand, sometimes acting as a window to its inherent purpose. About The Artist
Mattia Biagi is a graduate of the I.R.F.A, an Italian art and design school and immediately following graduation, served as an apprentice for the world-renowned furniture designer Giulio Cappelinini. It was this apprenticeship which instilled in Biagi a love of shape, contour and, most importantly, tactile materials.
In 2001, Biagi moved from Italy to Los Angeles, California. Upon his arrival, he was inspired by one of the city's most famous landmarks, the La Brea Tar Pits, which would provide the inspiration for Biagi's current body of work. Entranced by the texture of the mysterious substance, he also was immediately intrigued by the dichotomy he had uncovered: a natural, primordial element existing within a modern, urban environment was a transcendent concept to the artist. Biagi believes that the tar has such a strong physicality, anything it touches is forever transformed-and this perception is reflected everywhere in his work.
With the use of universal, everyday objects, Biagi's art serves to transcend all barriers, allowing him to move the viewer along a journey that is also his mission as a sculptor: to create a visual record of modern culture encapsulated and suspended in time.
