> DESCRIPTION
Mutant children, legless dogs and evil rabbits
inhabit Kathie Olivas'
aberrant post apocalyptic universe.
She cynically uses the inherent
preciosity of children playing
dress-up to create a world where only
children and a few seemingly
cute animals survive an unnamable catastrophe.
Using
a wonderful visual sleight of hand, Olivas first draws you in with
rich, seductive color and childlike trophies only to leave you
mystified and
perturbed by her disturbing fantasies.
"Ghosts and Martyrs" is the second solo
exhibition for Kathie in Los
Angeles; her first debuting one year ago. This
exhibition will feature over 30 paintings and 25 custom toys.
Over the past year, Kathie's backgrounds began
to lose the scumbly, dreamlike
colors and have turned darker, and more
foreboding. Cemeteries peek from
illusory fog, and large black hooded
figures loom nightmarishly behind the
prescient children. The
devastated landscape now sprouts desiccated trees
and bushes blooming
with candy are anything but sweetness and
light.
