DF2 Gallery is pleased to announce Film Stills of the Mind, a solo exhibition of new photographs by Hugo Tillman. The exhibition runs from September 8 through October 13, 2007. A reception for the artist will be held on September 8, from 6 pm to 8 pm. Tillman spent two years in China conducting interviews with contemporary artists in Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and Hangzhou. The subject matter ranged from the artists’ childhoods in China, to their private fantasies and personal philosophies. Based on the content of each interview, Tillman constructed a set to reveal the artist’s desires, traumas and secrets. The artist was then invited to perform a scene within the set. The result is a metaphorical map of the Chinese artistic psyche. The exhibition at DF2 Gallery will survey photographs of leading artists in China, including Ai Weiwei, Wang Qingsong, Wang Guangyi, Feng Zhengjie, Zhang Xiaogang, Zeng Fanzhi, Zhang Bandi, Cao Fei, Fang Lijun, Qiu Zhijie, Chen Wenling, Lin Jian and Li Songsong. Several of the original recorded interviews will be installed to accompany the photographs. British born photographer, Hugo Tillman, currently lives and works in New York and London. This exhibition is being held in cooperation with F2 Gallery, Beijing.
