2009 New Works Residency (for U.S. residents)

Deadline:   Wednesday, November 5, 2008 for projects beginning January 1, 2009 - December 31, 2009.   (Applications must be postmarked or delivered in person by 6pm on Nov. 5, 2008.  Late or incomplete applications will not be considered.)

Overview: the Harvestworks Artist In Residence program offers 20-40 hours of technical assistance plus access to our technology lab to make a new work in our state of the art digital media facility, plus a $1000 fee upon completion of the work. The artist works with a team comprised of a project manager, engineer and programmer (if required).

New works may include the creation of a new video work with a surround sound audio mix, audio recording and mastering of a surround sound piece, the creation of a new web art work and the development of a live interactive music/video/installation system using Max/MSP/Jitter or similar programming languages.  Up to 12 residencies will be selected (depending on project size and funding) along with two alternates in the event any resident artist cannot participate.  Priority will be given to the creative use of the Harvestworks' production facility and the innovative use of sound and/or picture.  Emerging artists and artists of color are encouraged to apply.

Eligibility:  The Artist in Residency (AIR) program is designed to assist individual working artists and their collaborators.  Groups and ensembles are not eligible.  Only new work proposals are accepted.  Proposals that document an existing work are not eligible.  Students who are currently enrolled in a university are not eligible.  AIR recipients from the past 2 years are not eligible to apply this year.  Applicants must reside in the U.S.

Project Presentation:  Work produced in the program is premiered in the Harvestworks' 5.1 Presentation Lab, or may be included in one of our festival programs.   Residents are also included in the Artists Guide, an Internet compilation of digital artwork on the Harvestworks website.

2009 Van Lier Residency (for NYC residents)

Deadline:   Wednesday, October 1, 2008 (Applications must be postmarked or delivered in person by 6pm on Oct. 1, 2008.  Late or incomplete applications will not be considered.)

Eligibility: Applicants should be young artists (generally - but not necessarily - under 30 years old), working in digital media, whose work would benefit from significant time in Harvestworks' studios and from expert engineering assistance. Applicants must reside in New York City. Applicants must be able to demonstrate financial need for this internship. In the final round, income tax returns or similar documents will be required as proof of financial need.

Harvestworks Digital Media Center offers a one-year Van Lier fellowship for young, New York-based artists with financial need and from backgrounds traditionally underrepresented in the electronic arts.  The residencies help advance Van Lier fellows' professional, post-college development and promote diversity, equity and access in the arts.  A stipend of $6,000 is also included in exchange for community work. The Van Lier fellowship is funded through a special grant from the New York Community Trust.

The one-year Van Lier fellowships cover travel and living expenses and include access to training, studio space and production facilities at Harvestworks.  Van Lier fellows can take advantage  of Harvestworks' broad-based education program to acquire new skills and work with our staff of engineers, artists and multimedia designers in creating new compositions.  Once completed, the compositions, or digital media works, will be performed as part of Harvestworks' Listen In concert series and included in our on-line catalogue, and may be included in one of our festival programs.  Fellows also receive important career development support through our mentoring and peer-contact programs.
